Project Alex - Character Art - Resident Evil 4 & The Callisto Protocol inspired Locomotion & Combat system

Hi! No code this time, this post is about the art of main character - I am terrible at art :D

I really like the retro look of PS1/PS2 art. I've never owned a PS1 or PS2 myself, but there's something about that style that appeals to me. I chose it for both aesthetic and technical reasons – it allows for more imperfections and much less detail, which I, not being an artist, am happy to embrace such simplifications.

I plan to combine the hand-painted retro game style from the PS1/PS2 era, similar to what the beautiful game SIGNALIS does, with the faceless approach of the game Ashen. I'm not yet certain about the lack of faces, but it sounds like an additional solution to my lack of skills. I'll only be able to assess it once I give it a try :)

Since Alex is supposed to be a police officer/detective, he needs certain elements that indicate this, such as:

  • Walkie-talkie,
  • Flashlight,
  • Holster for a weapon, and a weapon itself. I really like the look of the straps in RE4 - they give a badass vibe.
  • Perhaps sunglasses as an additional element.

RE4

Look how cool it looks!

Alex's attire will likely be off-duty, so he won't be in a uniform. Instead, he might be regular pants and a shirt, maybe a simple shiort or an unbuttoned jersey. Additional dangling elements to add secondary motion/physics - a badge, perhaps a belt with containers to store game-related items like evidence, ammo, medpacks.

I found a very nice base model that I'll remodel and retexture to suit my needs and then proceed to Rigging. Rigging will have its own separate post because I've spent a lot of time and energy understanding how it should be done, taking into account my plans for procedural bone control and the use of UE5 - here's the link:

Pretty cool eh?:D

That's it - just a quick post to keep it consistent, this week i've been mostly learning about rigging which I will explain in separate post once im done - hopefully it will work :) Thanks!
